Leave in all shapes and sizes

Different types of leave are shooting up like mushrooms. Some companies have taken to letting their employees decide among themselves when to take a vacation. Additionally, some employers allow their personnel to buy extra leave; these leave days will then be deducted from their salary. Furthermore, it is now possible to donate exceeding statutory leave days to co-workers who are in need of more free time – for instance in the case of volunteer aid – and a Dutch social-liberal party is pushing to extend the period of paternity leave to three months.

Yet other companies have completely abolished the concept of leave, in order to allow their employees to decide for themselves how many vacation days they want to take – a trend originally started by online companies, which is now spreading to other organisations and branches.

The big picture instead of details

In the meantime, the organisation needs to be kept running, which causes a lot of pressure for the HR department. Naturally, not every company will be dealing with every single type of leave, but the fact remains that every organisation should be adapting to the new day and age. Today, we discuss paternity leave, but who knows what’s on the agenda tomorrow when it comes to leave?

Good preparation is crucial. HR-managers who are able to maintain a good overview can make sure they see the big picture, instead of focusing too much on the details. If you really want to focus on your core business, it’s time to implement a good leave registration system.
